Most recent trip to the rockpile Reply #5 on : Mon June 21, 2010, 10:28:42
My family and I took in a ballgame recently, only our second this year due to rainouts and scheduling conflicts. I left the gates feeling relieved to be gone, which is not a good thing. The play on the field was neither dazzling nor despicable. I was happy to see them come away with the win, but left not really excited about the game.
The cause for my greatest frustration was the food stands. I use the plural form of stands because there are three potential areas from which to distribute concessions, however, only one was being utilized. I imagine many dollars were lost because people did not want to wait in the extremely long line that stretched into the corridor beneath the stands. I know for a fact, I was the only one of the three families I came to the park with to waste the few innings in line to get something. I would not have done that if I had not brought along my two daughters to the game that were complaining of hunger. I don't understand why the other 2 areas could not be opened.
Also, where is the Genebacher's shaved ice shack that my girls so loved the last couple of years. They look forward to getting them at the game, but it is replaced this year by a couple knock off machines that can't stay cold enough to operate.
I also must admit that the changing of the guard from HyVee to County Market is terrible. Last year we were able to get a meal at the ballpark. They had a calender of the different choices they were going to offer for each game. This year for both games we have attended we see chicken strips. Is this the only thing that will be offered, or can we expect a rotating menu of choices.
I do have to give some props in my endless rant. The new mascot this year, I would like to give an A. It was nice to see GemBird moving around and getting into it a little more. Also, the staff seemed to do well. The on field announcer could use a jolt of personality, but I think it was okay. It was nice to see them all getting into "YMCA". The field looked spectacular as always and the new nets can allow a father a little less worry on fould balls. The presentation is good too. I like the green and blue flags flying, it is very appealing to the eye.
So after my unpleasent experience this last trip, I am unsure when, or if we will return again this season. It is sad really. I have been a season ticket holder in the past, I have watched and followed the gems since the very first year when Heath Bender toed the bag at first, my wife and I even went on our first date to a Gems game, but I was just sooooo disappointed in the overall atmosphere. From the evesdropping I did in my endless wait in the food line, I was not alone.
